Delta Plane Flips Upside Down in Crash Landing at Toronto Airport

A Delta Air Lines flight carrying 80 passengers and crew crash-landed amid heavy snow and flipped upside down at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday. The accident left multiple people injured and prompted an immediate emergency response.

What Happened?

Delta Flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, took off from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and was attempting to land in Toronto around 1:15 p.m. CST when it crashed on the icy runway. The aircraft skidded out of control due to the harsh winter conditions, eventually overturning.

Injuries & Emergency Response

  • 18 people were hospitalized, including a child and two adults in critical condition.
  • The critically injured passengers—a woman in her 40s and a man in his 60s—were airlifted to a nearby hospital.
  • The remaining injuries were classified as minor to moderate, according to Peel Regional Paramedic Services.

Delta immediately canceled all remaining flights in and out of Pearson Airport for the rest of Monday.

Investigations Underway

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has launched an investigation into the crash. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will also send experts to assist in the probe.

Reactions & Statements

  • Delta CEO Ed Bastian expressed concern, saying, “The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected by today’s incident.”
  • The Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) confirmed that no fatalities had been reported and urged the public not to speculate while investigators work to gather details.
  • Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was “relieved” that there were no casualties and assured that provincial officials were in contact with airport authorities.

Weather Conditions at the Time

Meteorologists reported low visibility (6 miles), heavy snow, and high winds (gusts up to 37 mph) at the time of the crash. The temperature was 17°F (-8°C), making for dangerous runway conditions.

Recent Aviation Incidents

This crash follows two deadly aviation accidents in recent weeks:

  1. A mid-air collision between an American Airlines plane and an Army Black Hawk helicopter at Reagan National Airport, killing all on board.
  2. A medical jet crash in Philadelphia, where six passengers and one person on the ground lost their lives.

Authorities will now work to determine what led to the Delta crash in Toronto and whether weather conditions, mechanical failure, or pilot error played a role.
